Iran, Syria ‘belonging to a single front’

Iran, Syria ‘belonging to a single front’

TEHRAN, Mar. 15 (MNA) – Leader’s adviser has told Syrian deputy-FM the country has been the backbone of Islamic resistance in the Middle East.

Ali Akbar Velayati, former foreign minister and current head of Strategic Research Center of Expediency Council met with Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal all-Miqdad who is visiting Tehran. Velayati believed that Iran and Syria had been fighting in the same frontline since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, and the outcome of the cooperation was evident in the region; “were it not for Syria’s friends and allies in the region and their cooperation with Syria, the situation would be quite different than it is now; Russian joining to the frontline transformed the conditions to the benefit of the resistance front including Iran, Iraq, Lebanese Hezbollah, and Syria,” Velayati told the meeting. “Enemies now face the grim situation when in Syria their objectives have not been realized; furthermore, Syrian government survived unscathed from a small world war which sought to destroy the backbone of resistance in the region, despite the massive devastation of the country during the civil war.”

Velayati slammed Saudi Arabian petty policies of calling Hezbollah a terrorist organization; “it is because the most reactionary regime of the region has come to a debacle in Syria; they systematically failed to advance any of their goals in the ground; this has angered the kingdom’s naïve and brazen rulers; we are quite confident that Syria will be the ultimate winner with the help of its allies in the region which include some wiser Arab governments,” he told Miqdad.

“Iran highly evaluates the ceasefire in Syria between the warring factions and the government; we closely watch the situation on the ground in Syria and are in close contact with Syrian friends in Damascus,” he concluded.
